This research project sets out to investigate the interpretation of the terminology used in the UK National Student Survey questionnaire by art and design students with consideration of the tradition of oral conversation and discussion that are core elements in a pedagogic ‘studio’ environment.
This qualitative interview-based study was carried out through a series of semi-structured interviews with a small group art and design students who had just completed the NSS questionnaire in 2011.
This paper shares these findings and highlights themes that may further contribute to an understanding of how communication and interpretation can inform and impact on future studio-based design pedagogy and practice not just in the UK but Internationally.
