Hive-Design for Big Data
An epistomologic framework, this paper
draws from social sciences, media theory, philosophy, business, and the
practice of design to develop a comprehensive knowledge construct deciphering
the role of the designer in an age of Big Data. From this framework, areas of
design research and practice are defined. Practice methods for the designer as
an executive member of the business strategy team are framed in terms of
efficiency and value. The possibilities for implementing crowd-sourced
subjective and multi/ media data, interpreted by the vast numbers of social
media users at a scale even greater than big data, are explored - hivedesign
for big data. It is argued that designers are best qualified to perceive,
interpret and contextualize phenomena such as mass customization, the
quantified-self and wearable interfaces in an effort to achieve an optimized
and rich whole data synthesis. The paper asserts:
• Big Data is quantif iable but ultimately without much meaning. • Sof t Data, four times as big as Big Data, requires
human minds to interpret.
• Data without Design is insuf

• Whole Data Research integrates structured and non/

A Longitudinal Study on the Effects of Innovation, Marketing Strategy on Product Design and New Product Development Performance
In enterprises, innovation, marketing, and product design should closely coordinate each
other. Past studies did find some practical actions for product design in enterprises so as to
reach the expected performance in new product development. But literature regarding the
relationships among innovation, marketing, and design strategies for new product
development is limited.
In this study, a theoretical model was built up by the analysis of the literature related to
enterprise innovation, marketing, design strategies, and new product development
performance for the pilot questionnaire survey. 1300 enterprises from the database of the
Taiwan electronic and computer industry were randomly chosen as the subject pool for the
formal survey. In two longitudinal surveys, the managers for new product policy in these
companies were interviewed. In the first survey, situations regarding the marketing,
innovation, and design strategies of the enterprise were investigated, from which 350
effective questionnaires were gathered. After a year of the introduction of new products in
the market place, a second survey was conducted for the collection of new product
development performance, from which 270 enterprises returned and were used for further
analysis.
The structural equation model (SEM) and fitness of the observed data were analyzed. A
proper goodness of fit has been found for the correlation theoretical model and observed
data for innovation, marketing, design strategies and new product development
performance in enterprises. The innovation and marketing strategies in an enterprise will
influence the performance of new product development through design strategy. Among
them, design strategy serves as an independent variable and an intervening variable for
new product development performance. Results from this study were also compared and
contrasted with those from past studies in theoretical and practical design domains in
terms of innovation, marketing, and product design.

Design and the Innovation Agenda – A Scottish perspective
Against the backdrop of increasing focus by UK policy makers and international academics
on the links between design, innovation and economic growth, this paper details an
ambitious research project being undertaken in the UK. The project is titled ‘Design In
Action’: a knowledge exchange hub running from 2012 to 2016 through which
interdisciplinary teams will engage in collaborative design to pilot a new model of designled
innovation.
As Design In Action (DIA) is in the stage of early development, this paper will outline the
research that is being proposed and how the ‘sandpit’ method of intensive workshops will
be used to enable collaborative innovation. It will detail the planned aims of the project,
both in concrete terms (i.e. the number of products created) and in terms of how it is
intended that the project will promote design as an economic driver. The paper will
address the theories that have influenced the development of DIA, touching on the role of
design in the innovation process and how the DIA team has defined the creative process
that will be fostered. Finally the paper will, through the lead author’s doctoral research,
add to the debate on the model of ‘design-driven innovation’ championed by Roberto
Verganti, how the model compares to the approach of user-centered design and how the
conflict between these two models has impacted the discussions of the role of the user in the
development of a toolkit for innovation.

The role of Industrial Design Consultancies in Diffusing the Concept of Ecodesign
While the discipline of industrial design can contribute to developing more environmentally friendly
products, researchers have found that even in companies with environmentally progressive products,
engineers are more readily involved in ecodesign activities than industrial designers. Some authors
propose to fundamentally change the context for designers and free them from their current role of
serving the economically motivated manufacturing industry. This would allow them to generate
sustainable solutions and actively contribute to sustainable development. Other scholars direct their
attention towards the knowledge and ability of industrial designers to conduct ecodesign activities. The role industrial designers can take for ecodesign within their current environment remains unclear.
This paper applies the framework of diffusion of innovations (DoI) to discuss how industrial designers can take a more active role in integrating ecodesign within an economically motivated context, using the example of an industrial design consultancy (IDC) collaborating with commercial client. For actively diffusing ecodesign, the paper proposes that an IDC needs to fill the roles of a local innovator and of a change agent. To do this the IDC needs to internalise knowledge on practicing ecodesign as well as convince its client of probable business opportunities for ecodesign. To identify these opportunities it can either draw on research into the current context for ecodesigned solutions or utilize design activity as a strategic resource to identify a potentially unarticulated demand for ecodesigned solutions.
The paper concludes by pointing out areas of further research such as empirically exploring how
knowledgeable IDCs are in terms of ecodesign and how they gain trust and credibility in their role as
change agents. Thereby context specific factors need to be taken into account such as industrial design education programs as well as the cultural environment the IDCs operate in.

with future oriented projects yet, there has been little investigation within academic design
research of the methods employed. In some ways much of the discourse coming out of
design practice is commercial propaganda - with the sole aim of generating new business.
The design industry is good at communicating what future focussed services it is able to
offer yet the methods employed are shrouded in a similar level of mystery (and scepticism)
as those employed by a magician or shaman. Commercial sensitivities mean that the design
industry is good as say what they can do in terms of creating future oriented ‘next-next
generation’ products and services yet they do not convey how this is achieved with the
same level of enthusiasm. A design led futures framework is presented to support designers
in the development of next-next generation products (and services) and provides a
mechanism to underpin future oriented design projects. Based upon analysis of empirical
evidence drawn from 40+ expert interviews, the study identifies the growing need for
organisations to engage designers to consider the future within an increasingly complex
